How to Get More LinkedIn Endorsements
There are key metrics people chase on LinkedIn; 500+ connections, an all-star profile ranking, just to name a few. In this post, I'll be covering how to reach a major LinkedIn milestone, achieving 99+ endorsements on a skill.
Originally, I thought it would be the same process as receiving a recommendation. A strenuous, but simple process of asking people, one by one, hoping they take the time to write kind words about you.
After some research into professional LinkedIn profiles such as Michael Brenner's, I discovered anyone with 99+ endorsements on a single skill has over 10,000 connections, is a keynote speaker, or is an influencer.
I started to realize it would be nearly impossible to reach 99+ endorsements as a standard user with only 1,100 connections. At this point, I saw two options, ask everyone for an endorsement or find a way to automate it.
Why Chase 99+ Endorsements?
LinkedIn activity is increasing on a daily basis and the user count is growing very quickly, thanks to Microsoft. At the same time, people still have faith and trust in the platform. Below are scenarios in which I believe it is advantageous to have 99+ endorsements on a skill.
-While job hunting. Employers will visit your profile and be impressed by the endorsements. (Even more so for a marketing job)
-Consultant profile. When a potential client is seeking a pro growth hacker and they see you've been endorsed 99+ times for growth hacking, they'll believe your ability to perform.
-Freelancer profile. Whom do you think a client, that uses LinkedIn, would rather choose to develop their site? A freelancer with 5 endorsements or one with 99+ people backing their skills.
-Founder seeking investment. When an investor views your LinkedIn profile and sees that you've been endorsed for a skill 99+ times, chances are, they'll place more trust in your abilities.
The list goes on...
How to Get More LinkedIn Endorsements
There are three answers to this question.
- Endorse your connections.
- You can endorse someone by going to their profile and scrolling down toward the bottom of the page. From there, click the "+" next to the skill you want to endorse them for.
Yep, it's that easy.
2. Ask connections to endorse you.
Reach out to your connections. Depending on your industry, connections will be active and happy to endorse you for something they recognize is in your skillset.
3. Win endorsements organically.
Write articles, comment on active conversations, get quoted in an article, and much more.
Don't be fooled, although these methods seem simple, the time required to reach 99+ is astronomical.
The Work Required to Reach 99+
Of the three methods listed above, I chose to endorse other connections in hopes that they'd return the favor. When you endorse someone they'll receive 2 notifications. One on LinkedIn and another goes directly to their email inbox, chances are, they'll see you've endorsed them.
Over the course of a week, I endorsed 750 of my connections for their top skill. Here is the return you can expect from this large task.
The number of endorsements returned wasn't very high, but at least people were messaging me, "thanks for endorsing me!" 🙂
We can see in the table, of 750 given endorsements 35 connections returned a thank you message and 26 connections returned endorsements. "Endorsed Me" was the number of people who returned an endorsement, some people endorsed me for 15+ skills, others only two.
At this rate I will have to endorse each of my 1,100 connections three times to reach 99+ endorsements on a skill that has 0 endorsements. It may seem crazy, but this is obtainable within one month.
-98% of people who returned an endorsement, endorsed me for a top three skill. If you want to increase the endorsements on a skill, put it in your top three.
-Endorsing a connection has a 4% chance of them starting a conversation with you. *Social Salespeople. Hint Hint.
-Endorse 750 connections and you can expect to receive endorsements from 20-30 of your connections.
-Endorse a connection and there is a 3% chance they'll endorse you.
-Someone who thanks you for an endorsement has a 74% chance of endorsing you.
-Endorsing connections is a brilliant way to reactive a relationship. It's very similar to the "poke" function that used to be on Facebook.
-The more connections you have, the easier it is to get endorsements.
Endorsements At Scale
I did not sit at my desk, visit 750 profiles and press the endorse button 750 times. I found a way to automate the process.
If you want to know how I did this at scale, please leave a comment below. I'll gladly share the info with you.
